Don’t Forget: Today is International Day of Solidarity with Eco-Prisoners

11 Jun

It’s not too late to show your solidarity with Eric McDavid, Marie Mason, and all long-term anarchist prisoners

Today the Earth First! Journal Collective and volunteers wrote letters and sent pictures to our friends behind bars

This is the third annual June 11th celebrated in solidarity with political prisoners. In the last two years, many have participated in actions to show support for those held hostage by the State. You can send a letter, write a poem, draw picture, donate to their support funds, or take action to show your love!

Write to Eric McDavid:

Write to Marie Mason:

Tomorrow and Thursday, June 12-13, are also days to support Oso Blanco, an Indigenous rights activist and political prisoner who is being denied medical attention despite his critical condition. Find out more here.

Check out the NYC Anarchist Black Cross’s Illustrated Guide to Political Prisoners and Prisoners of War for more on political prisoners and how you can reach out to them.

Some history from

June 11th began as an international day of solidarity with long-term eco-prisoner Jeff “Free” Luers in 2004. At the time, Jeff was serving 22+ years. Infuriated by the environmental devastation he saw occurring on a global scale, Jeff torched three SUVs at a car dealership in Eugene, OR. The sentence imposed on him was meant to send a clear message to others who were angered by capitalism’s continued war on the Earth’s ecosystems – and to those who were willing to take action to put a stop to it. Jeff is, after all, not alone in his concerns about climate change, fossil fuels, pollution and genetically modified organisms.

After years of struggle, Jeff and his legal team won a reduction in his sentence and he was released from prison in December 2009. But in the years intervening Jeff’s arrest and release, the FBI had carried out a series of indictments and arrests in an attempt to devastate the radical environmental and anarchist communities. Two of the people caught up in this maelstrom of repression were Eric McDavid and Marie Mason.

This is awesome, but I really wish people would also include Walter Bond, who is an anarchist, serving 12 yrs in the CMU. Or Nyki Kish, serving a life sentence in Ontario, also an anarchist. Marie Mason, Eric McDavid, and Oso Blanco all are definitely worht supporting and I encourage every one to keep up the support, but don’t forget about the others who are less popular.

The call for this year included: “June 11th has also become a staging ground for building our international ties of solidarity. The last two years have seen an incredible show of support from people outside of the US for Eric and Marie, and some efforts within the US to show solidarity to long-term anarchist prisoners in other places. This year, we hope to have more translations, more cross-referencing of struggle, and a further broadening of solidarity that does not take away, but adds. We refuse to recognize their borders; we aim to make that refusal more tangible. ”

While this is specifically about international prisoners (such as Jock Palfreeman, Marco Camenisch, etc.), it also applies to Walter Bond. June 11 has slowly grown to encompass more prisoners, usually on the basis of reciprocal solidarity. In other words, if you do an event or action and link Nyki or Walter with June 11, that’d be a precedent for listing them in the future. Another path, perhaps even better, would be writing these two prisoners yourself, asking their opinions of being linked solidaristically and then asking the folks who respond to to start being in touch with them.

      An example:

Thanks for the suggestion! The EF! Journal corresponds with Walter Bond and Nyki Kish, and we send them copies of the Journal as well. We wish we had space to mention all eco and anarchist prisoners, instead of just links to the ABC guide, and we hope that support goes out to everyone who has fought to liberate the Earth on June 11. If you’d like to talk to the folks about refocusing (or broadening) focus on their prisoner support campaign, to get Bond and Kish specifically mentioned, that might get them more support. For these posts we are mostly forwarding their message. I hope you saw the awesome statement, “Solidarity and Liberation,” that was released by Walter Bond today!
