Global Noise Demo: Mother’s Day 2013

outside & inside prisons, jails, and detention centers everywhere that hold women captive.

Mother’s Day began not just as a day to honor mothers, but as a day for mothers to express solidarity with one another and against the wars that left widows and orphans impoverished. This Mother’s Day, in honor of this tradition, we are calling for a global day of solidarity with incarcerated mothers and against a penal system that disproportionately cages people based on race, class, and gender non-conformity.

The US prison system incarcerates 113,000 women, 85,000 are mothers. This injustice system leaves 15,000 parents bereft of their adult daughters and thus responsible for raising their grandchildren. Many of the children of incarcerated mothers become wards of the state, beginning a cycle all too familiar to imprisoned women–most of the women in prison who were removed from their own families as children report being abused in the foster and institutionalized care imposed by the state and a staggering 75% of women prisoners are survivors of sexual violence.

Noise demonstrations outside of prisons are a growing tradition–a way of expressing solidarity with people imprisoned, sharing joy and celebration within struggle, and remembering those held captive by the state. Mother’s Day is, without exaggeration, the most emotional day in women’s prisons. Few imprisoned mothers will receive a visit from their children this year–let alone on this day. A noise demo breaks the isolation and alienation of the cell walls, but we cannot stop there. The captivity of women does not begin inside those walls, but rather with the threats of poverty and violence outside them. Liberation means an end to the abusive economic systems that devalue human needs and relationships, reducing our mothers to wage slaves and commodities for others’ profits. Continue reading

Hello Friends and Comrades,

Here is the political prisoner birthday poster for April. As always, please post this poster publicly and/or use it to start a card writing night of your own. Tragically, there are four more people on this poster than there were last April. Let’s make sure to show them lots of love and support for their first birthday locked up.

This Mother’s Day, in honor of this tradition, we are calling for a global day of solidarity with incarcerated mothers and against a penal system that disproportionately cages people based on race, class, and gender non-conformity. Daniel McGowan Spring Update

19 Mar

daniel_mcgowan_11_dec_2012_lgaFrom NYC Anarchist Black Cross

It has been some time before we sent out a proper update about Daniel. The last 3 months have been busy with helping Daniel adjust to life outside of prison. His support crew recently sent a comprehensive update.

We wanted to thank everyone for the supportive emails we have received since December. Not only has Daniel seen and read all of them but we are all appreciative of the support that people have continued to show him since 2005.

How is Daniel doing since release?

This is the question we get the most and its a tough one for a few reasons. We want to protect Daniel’s privacy and his desire to move forward but he also wants people to know he is doing well. As you may know, Daniel is working for a law firm in NYC and started two days after he got to the halfway house. He is working full-time, seeing his wife Jenny, family and friends on weekends and counting the days until he comes home for good. He is not doing media interviews nor can he attend public speaking events at the moment. We will continue to share emails sent to friendsofdanielmcg@yahoo.com with Daniel. Continue reading

A Thank You from Marie Mason to All Who Wished Her Happy Birthday

14 Mar

Marie MasonFrom Support Marie Mason

Greetings Family and Comrades, Well-wishers, fellow activists, anarchists (and non-be/quantifiable),
I want to say thank you for all of the amazing and sweet greetings, cards, letters, photos and artwork that people sent me in response to the event in January. Mail was held up for a bit, but I think that it has all been processed and passed on to me by now.

It was the most incredible inspiration to hear from so many folks working to defend animals, Earth and human rights from so many places! I have learned so much. People sent their stories about great campaigns and histories of struggle, creation stories and poetry, their own beautiful artwork and so much love in words.

I have been really trying to write as many folks as I can, and am always sad that I am limited by the number of stamps they allow us and by whether contact is approved. Please know that I was touched and encouraged by whatever you sent (not a mean word in the bunch), and that it meant a lot to have been given a push by my community. Continue reading

Hello Friends and Comrades,

Here is the political prisoner birthday poster for March. As always, please post this poster publicly and/or use it to start a card writing night of your own. We’re still experimenting with the format a little, so this month is also a double sided 11×17 that can also be used as a poster to promote your local letter writing night.

Every year Internationalist Books and Community Center – the bookstore that sponsors our Prison Books collective – gives out the Bob Sheldon Award. They do this in honor of Bob Sheldon, who founded Internationalist Books in 1981 and ran it until he was murdered in 1991. They used the 2013 award to recognize the many bold organizers inside the prisons of North Carolina, saying “This year, we choose to honor the bravery and resilience of people engaged in struggle against some of the most crushing odds in our society – the violence and captivity of the state.” Here their full statement. Hello Friends and Comrades,

Here is the political prisoner birthday poster for February. As always, please post this poster publicly and/or use it to start a card writing night of your own. We’re still experimenting with the format a little, so this month is also a double sided 11×17 that can also be used as a poster to promote your local letter writing night.

This month’s poster is dedicated to Aaron Swartz. Here is an article we posted about his life and death.

Accused Earth Liberation Front arsonist Rebecca Rubin has been transferred again. Please write her letters of love and support. Remember, she is still pre-trial so please avoid writing about anything to do with her case. Continue reading
