Daniel McGowan Sent Back to Prison

4 Apr

Less than a week after Daniel’s article regarding being held in a CMU for his political speech was published by the Huffington Post, he has been sent back into custody. The following message is from a support site for Daniel McGowan:

daniel-mcgowan_apr-2013“Just when we thought it was over…. We have some bad news to report. This morning Daniel was taken into custody by federal marshals and is now at the federal detention center in Brooklyn getting processed.

We are still waiting to hear why this has occurred. Considering his exemplary behavior at the halfway house, approved weekend passes and the full-time job he started as soon as he was released back to the city this is all pretty insane. The Bureau of Prisons has proven to be cruel and vindictive time and time again.

Anyway, what YOU can do right now is write to Daniel and send your love! We don’t know how long he will be here, but there is a good chance it will be until his sentence officially ends on June 5.

Please write to:

Thanks for your continued support!”

Daniel McGowan, 2013

by Daniel McGowan, Huffington Post

I currently reside at a halfway house in Brooklyn, serving out the last few months of a seven-year sentence for my role in arsons credited to the Earth Liberation Front (ELF) at two lumber companies in Oregon in 2001.  My case, and the federal government’s rush to prosecute environmental activism as a form of terrorism, were recently explored in the Oscar-nominated documentary, If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front

if a tree falls 10499656-largeWhat has received less attention, though, is what happened to me while in federal prison.  I was a low security prisoner with a spotless disciplinary record, and my sentencing judge recommended that I be held at a prison close to home.  But one year into my sentence, I was abruptly transferred to an experimental segregation unit, opened under the Bush Administration, that is euphemistically called a “Communication Management Unit” (CMU) Since August 2008, when I first arrived at the CMU, I have been trying to get answers Continue reading

Remembering Avalon on Winter Solstice

17 Dec

avalonEnvironmental and social justice activist, ELF warrior and political prisoner William C. Rodgers (known to friends as “Avalon”) died on December 21, 2005. A casualty of the Green Scare, he committed suicide in jail, citing the following reason:

“To my friends and supporters to help them make sense of all these events that have happened so quickly: Certain human cultures have been waging war against the Earth for millennia. I chose to fight on the side of bears, mountain lions, skunks, bats, saguaros, cliff rose and all things wild. I am just the most recent casualty in that war. But tonight I have made a jail break—I am returning home, to the Earth, to the place of my origins. Bill, 12/21/05 (the winter solstice.)”

Daniel McGowan released from prison!

11 Dec

daniel_mcgowan_11_dec_2012_lgaEarth Liberation Front political prisoner and Rockaway native Daniel McGowan was released from the Communication Management Unit (CMU) in Terre Haute, Indiana this morning. He was driven by federal authorities to Indianapolis International Airport, where he met up with his wife.

Though the two have been able to visit during Daniel’s imprisonment, today marked the first time in years that they could hug, hold hands, or make any physical contact (save for a few month stint when Daniel was in general population in Marion, Illinois– between the CMU there and the one in Terre Haute). The two flew back to New York City together, where they were met by a small group of close friends at the airport.

Hey Daniel McGowan… Get A Job!

9 Jun

Earlier this year, Daniel McGowan and his support crew put out a call for post-prison support. (That’s right, Daniel will be in a halfway house by the end of the year.) One of the conditions for his release is employment. And the search is still on. With the international eco-anarchist holiday, June 11, around the corner, what better way to celebrate than to pitch in on support for one of the movement’s most outspoken ecoprisoners. Please help to circulate the message below… Continue reading
