Catching Fire to the Reign

19 May

or, Why I think the second Hunger Games film will be a spark that reduces the US Empire to ashes, and in general, why we need to manifest a subversive potential of pop-culture

by Panagioti, EF! Newswire

That’s right, I just referenced The Hunger Games and Adele in one cheesy fell swoop… No shame here. I got nothing to hide. I want to see us usher in an era where it’s commonplace for experiences of popular entertainment to end in a riot, ala Igor Stravinsky’s 1913 Rite of Spring debut.  Yes, I want people to leave Adele’s concerts (when she resumes touring after the new album, allegedly later this year) setting cop cars ablaze—in the rain—either with joy over her beautiful voice, or disgust over her obscene commercial success. It doesn’t much matter. Those riots will be like warm-ups for the big one in the Fall…

On November 22, when the second film in The Hunger Games trilogy, Catching Fire, is released, I think we should anticipate every shopping plaza surrounding the corporate theaters to be ransacked, with every police station demolished (or the “Peacekeepers” as Katniss Everdeen knows them), and every building controlled by the State (“The Capitol”) occupied and turned into revolutionary day care centers where young children can be cared for while the rest of us are ripping up concrete and planting fruit tree forests across interstate super highways.

Virtual Cage Match of the Eco-Revolution

Stepping into the ring of online news media: Dick Cheney, Unobama, Sen. Heinrich, Young Dave Foreman and the Ghost of Judi Bari

by Panagioti, Earth First! Newswire

rev cage matchWe’re flattered to see what seems to be a renewed international interest in Earth First! (EF!) from industrial-ass-kissing idiotic right-wing lackeys—so much so that we thought we’d highlight some of the recent fervor, and even throw in our own tw0-cents.

There have been a few full articles, like those of and scoffing at the fictitious EF!-fringe “EAT IT” which we featured on the EF! Newswire last month, or UK’s Daily Mail tabloid last week which connected EF! to a grand conspiracy that tied a Democratic Party Senator, Obama, Ted Kaczynski and the ghost of Dave Foreman’s EF! past all together in one fell swoop.

But to really understand the praise and attention of the right-wing “conservatives,” one must enter into the realm of their one true stronghold where they enjoy an over-abundance of grassroots public support: the invisible world of anonymous online comments.   Continue reading

Poster for the documentary, “Who Bombed Judi Bari?”

Who Bombed Judi Bari? documentary presents the unsolved mystery of the 1990 car bombing of Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney, chronicles the FBI’s refusal to investigate the car bombing of these two Redwood activists, its arrest of victims; and a 1st amendment lawsuit against the Feds.

After winning four awards, filling theaters, and receiving media and audience acclaim, Who Bombed Judi Bari?, the 93-minute documentary, will meet a new audience on September 22 in Malibu, for more details check out the schedule of events at: http://whobombedjudibari.com

The movie chronicles one of the great American unsolved mysteries: Who, on May 24, 1990, tried to kill with a car bomb one of the most prominent environmental organizers of her day — Judi Bari? The movie is composed of 100% archival footage including a special Humboldt County live version of “Angel from Montgomery” performed by Bonnie Raitt, a live version of Shady Grove by the David Grisman Quintet performing at a tree-sit, rare footage of Woody Harrelson Climbing the Golden Gate Bridge, a tribute to Judi Bari by Jerry Brown, and a powerful press conference held by the late, legendary environmentalist, David Brower. The movie is narrated by Judi Bari herself, shot on camera as she told her life story through her deathbed testimony. As she weaves her tale under oath, the movie flashes back and forth to footage of the daring, action-packed, yet often humorous and musical scenes she depicts.

Judi Bari's car after the bombing in Oakland

By JONNY BONNER

The FBI must hand over evidence tied to a decades-old car bombing in the Bay Area in which two Earth First! activists were injured, a federal judge ruled.

On May 24, 1990, a pipe bomb wrapped with nails exploded under the Subaru wagon of environmentalist Judi Bari in Oakland, Calif. Bari and a fellow activist, Darryl Cherney, were seriously injured in the blast. The pair had been traveling to college campuses, rallying against the logging of old-growth redwood. In a federal lawsuit, Bari and Cherney said the Oakland Police Department and FBI framed them, and that the FBI withheld evidence crucial to solving the bombing Continue reading

Earth First! and the FBI: The Bombing of Judi Bari

18 May

We received this in our inbox and thought it was worth publishing. Particularly interesting is the $3+ billion incentive for the timber industry to discredit Judi. If you’re in the Bay Area this weekend, make sure to check out the JB commemoration events in Berkeley on Sunday and Oakland on Monday. Just found out, this is also on the Rag Blog.

WAR AGAINST THE ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENT:
The Bombing of Judi Bari

by Penelope Rosemont

On the 24 of May, twenty years ago sensationalist headlines across the country announced the arrest of two leading environmentalists, Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney. Their car had been bombed-but it was they who were arrested, charged with their own bombing! The environmental activist movement and Earth First! in particular were branded as terrorist organizations, this incident fell just after the very successful EF! campaign to save the old growth Redwoods, labeled “Redwood Summer” that brought in young people from all over the country—- they sang, they sat down in the roads, and they 0filled the jails like the old time Wobbly organizers, like Civil Rights activists, like the Peace Movement. It looked like the Timber industry was in for big trouble.  Continue reading
